RECORDS AND SOUNDTRACKS
Before they went out of business, I produced 2 CDs for Austin's
Watermelon Records:
• Santiago Jimenez, Jr. "Musica
del Tiempos Pasados, de Presente, y el Futuro" (review)
• Asylum Street Spankers "Spanks For the
Memories," thier debut release. It's still in print and critics still
referr to it as thier best work to date.
In '99, I began my releasing my
own recordings:
• Bing Bang Boys "I'm Feeling GOOD" Rubinchik Recordings
• Brian Marshall
"Texas Kapela" Marselek
Recordings
• Various Artists
"Hill Country Hannukah"
Rubinchik Recordings
• Rubinchik's Orkestyr "Flipnotics Freilachs" Rubinchik Recordings
• Barnes, Hokkanen, & Rubin "AKA The Mad Cat Trio" LumpyDisc
• The Texas Plainsmen, featuring Yodelin' Donnie Walser "Live"
Walser Archive Recordings
• Bad Livers "The Ridgtop Sessions" LumpyDisc
I've also produced music for film
and television:
• Dena Keagan's "Bela was Babbacasak,"
short film about a Russian-Jewish family legend.
• Chances are you never saw it, but I was responsible for
all the music in Richard Linklater's
"The Newton Boys" for 20th Century Fox. I'm
very proud of the results I strongly recommend you rent
the flick and/or pick up the soundtrack CD, on Sony Soundtrax, even though
I don't see a nickel in royalties. It was a honor and pleasure to rovide
music for this film and I mark it as the professional highlight of my career
thusfar.
• I also contributed tracks to a new documentary on the life
and legacy of Southern politician George Wallace called "Settin' the
Woods on Fire." I was employed to re-record several Hank Williams (Sr.)
tracks, including the title track, for pivotal scenes in the film.
It premiered at this years Sundance Film Festival, where it won a special
judges award for writing, and was broadcast on PBS nationwide in the fall
of '01. The song's publishers initially accused me of digitally cleaning
up the original Williams' masters, and we had to provide my backing tracks
as proof we made new recordings. I cannot think of a higher compliment.
• I produced and supervised
music for Paul Stekler's "Last Man Standing:
Politics - Texas Style" which also aired on PBS in July of 2004. It won
special an special award at the SXSW 2004 Film Festival and has sparked
a national debate on the rise of the Rebulican Party in Texas. "..an
intriguing ground level look at Texas politics as contact sport.." Variety.
